mselect is looking to hire a Workover Team Leader for an international oil and gas operator in Basrah, Iraq. Candidates must have at least 10-15 years’ experience in the workover industry. Fluency in English and Arabic is a must.

Role synopsis
  • The Workover Team Leader shall report to the Workover & Completions Superintendent and Workover Manager
  • The role shall be responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of the delivery of workover and completion operations on the field
  • Work closely with WSLs, Workover Engineering, rig and service contractors, supply chain and logistics, HSE, Civil Engineering, Production Operations, and other functions within the Wells Department
  • This role involves planning, coordinating, and supervising workover activities while providing technical leadership to Workover Engineers, Wellsite Leaders (WSLs), and ESP
  • The WO TL ensures operational excellence by integrating lessons learned, optimizing execution strategies, and driving performance improvements across multiple rigs
  • The Workover Team Leader typically oversees three rigs
  • This position also plays a key role in mentoring junior engineers and ensuring compliance with HSE and company policies
  • The role is mostly office-based but requires field visits to support rig operations

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead by example with a strong commitment to HSSE, following the client’s ‘Golden Rules’
  • Co-ordinate and manage operational delivery of workover and completion programmes including water shutoff, ESP repair, ESP installations, well integrity repairs, water injection completions, and natural flow completions, all in accordance with minimum operating standards
  • Workover Programme Review, feeding back operational lessons learned to facilitate continuous improvement
  • Overview with rig-based Wellsite Leader the planning and scheduling of materials and logistics
  • Led the team in troubleshooting operational challenges developing solutions in real-time identifying areas for improvement and implementing best practices
  • Review the correctness of and distribute workover reports
  • Provide direction to WSL, rig and service contractors to safely and efficiently execute the workover programmes on specific rigs in accordance with standards and processes
  • Review contractor invoices for correctness
  • Lead and/or participate in incident investigations, following through to close out as required
  • Assured rig moves planning and future location readiness
  • Schedule WSL rotas
  • Lead and/or participate in technical and safety audits, following through to close-out as required
  • Provided technical input to workover contract tender specifications and evaluation
  • Coaching and mentoring of local national staff

Requirements
  • Earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • A minimum of 10-15 years’ experience in the workover industry with 5 years at the rig site and at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
  • Experience with land rig workover operations and planning, including water shutoff, water injection, fishing, fracturing, stimulation, ESP operations, and complex workover projects in challenging environments
  • Valid IADC or IWCF Supervisory level Well Control certification
  • Proficient in safe working practices and good oil field practices
  • Good communication and mentoring skills to be commensurate with the above job role 
  • Strong English language skills are required
  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge of the oil industry
  • Strong team player with exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrable experience in managing rig and service contractors on multiple rig operations
  • Aptitude to innovate and be open to new ideas
  • Flexible approach to work
  • Strong knowledge of well-intervention techniques, ESP operations, and completion strategies
  • Proficiency in workover program development, risk assessments, and troubleshooting
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and crisis-management skills
  • Experience in contractor and stakeholder management
  • Deep understanding of HSE policies, regulatory standards, and safety leadership
  • Experience in conducting incident investigations and safety audits
